Why transfer a moped without a driving licence?

You do not need a driving licence to buy a moped. Maybe you are planning to get your licence soon, but you already have your eye on a nice moped. If the seller offers a good deal, it is of course hard to resist. That's why you may already be buying a moped, even though you don't have a driving licence yet. The moped has to be registered in your name. As soon as the registration number is in your name, you are obliged to take out moped insurance. You have to take out at least a WA insurance for your moped.

How can I register a moped without a driving licence?

Transferring a moped is the same whether you have a driving licence or not. Please follow the following steps:

  1. Ask the seller of the moped for the following documents: the original registration certificate and transfer certificate or thechain certificate in credit card format (also called registration card)
  2. Take these documents, together with a valid proof of identity, to a registration desk, PostNL location, RDW testing station or RDW desk
  3. Pay the costs of €10.40 at the desk
  4. The staff member will then transfer the moped to your name. You will then receive a registration report. This is written proof of the transaction and you should keep it.
  5. You will also receive the clearance certificate from the employee. You give this to the seller of the moped
  6. From the moment the licence plate is in your name, you are also liable for the obligations of a licence plate holder.
  7. RDW will send you the new registration card the same working day (if the registration was transferred before 16.00) or the next working day.
