Moped license plate
Every moped must have a registration number. Without a licence plate, you are not allowed to drive on the public roads. All new mopeds from 2007 and later have a standard registration number, because that is when the moped registration was introduced. If you have bought an older moped, you still need to apply for a licence plate. We tell you all about the moped registration!
Moped licence plate lost
Have you lost your moped's licence plate or has it been stolen? If so, you can purchase a new licence plate from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW. To do this, you must take the original vehicle registration certificate (Part IA) or the registration card. There is no fixed price for a new number plate; the manufacturer may determine this itself. You will then receive new number plates with a duplicate code from the manufacturer. The duplicate code is a number on the registration plate that indicates how many times plates have been issued for the moped.
Moped license plate application
You can apply for a licence plate for your moped from the RDW. You must first have your moped tested by the RDW. They check whether the moped meets the rules for driving on public roads and they check the technical condition. To apply for a license plate you can follow these steps:
- First you have to make an appointment for the examination. You can do this at 'Make an appointment for an examination'.
- Of course, your moped has to pass the inspection, but you are not allowed to drive it on the public roads yet. You can apply for a one-day licence plate to do this. You can do this at 'Apply for a one-day registration plate'. With a one-day registration number you may drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
- After the inspection, RDW sends you a registration card by post within 5 working days. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, all vehicle obligations apply, such as having a licence plate and third-party insurance.
- Finally, you buy the licence plate. You can do this with a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW.
There are a number of conditions for applying for a licence plate. For example, you must be at least 16 years old and be registered in the Basic Registration of Persons. You must also appear in person at the inspection and carry valid identification.
License plate check moped
If you have a licence plate in your name, your personal details are recorded in the RDW's licence plate register. The vehicle details are also recorded. To find out the details of the vehicle, you can do a licence plate check. These are non-private details about the moped. A licence plate check is useful when you want to buy or sell a moped. You can do a licence plate check here.
Once you have entered the registration number of the moped, you will see a number of data, such as the type of vehicle, the make and the number of owners. You will also see, for example, when the MOT expires and when the moped was last registered. You can also see whether the vehicle is registered for third-party insurance.
Moped without a licence plate
As mentioned, the registration number for mopeds was introduced in 2007. All mopeds from 2007 and later have a standard registration plate. Mopeds from before 2007 do not have a licence plate, so you have to apply for one yourself. You can find older mopeds second-hand on Marktplaats, for example, or perhaps in a family member's shed. Before you take it on the road, don't forget to apply for a licence plate and look for moped insurance! It is compulsory to take out at least third-party insurance for your moped.
