Driving without license plate prohibited

In fact, driving around on a moped without a license plate is prohibited. You are not allowed to ride a vehicle without a license plate on public roads. Nowadays, all mopeds have a license plate by default. If you buy an older moped from before 2007, chances are that the moped does not yet have a license plate. This is because the license plate requirement for mopeds was only introduced in 2007. In that case, you have to apply for a license plate yourself before you can ride the moped.

If you drive around on a vehicle without a license plate, you risk a fine. Even if your license plate is stolen or lost, you will be fined. Driving around without license plates is simply not allowed. If you are caught you will be fined €140. Even if the license plate is damaged or difficult to read, you risk a fine of €90.

Driving without a license plate

When you take your scooter on the road, you must have your paper registration certificate or registration card with you. This is because if you are stopped, the police may ask for it. If you cannot show this, you will be fined €60.

Have you recently transferred the moped's registration number to your name, but not yet received a registration card? Then you may drive without a license plate until 14 days after the transfer.

Have you lost your registration certificate or has it been stolen? Then you can apply for a new registration certificate through the RDW. You will then also automatically receive a new registration code.

License plate application

To avoid the risk of a fine, it is best to apply for a license plate immediately if your vehicle does not already have one. You can apply for the license plate at the RDW. Your moped will be inspected first. Among other things, the RDW will look at the technical condition of the vehicle and check whether the moped meets the rules for driving on public roads. Make an appointment here.

To take your moped to the inspection appointment, you must apply for a one-day registration plate. This allows you to drive to the inspection location on the day of the inspection. Apply for a one-day registration plate here.

After the inspection, the RDW sends you a registration card by mail within 5 working days. One working day later they will send a letter with the registration code. Once all documents are in, all vehicle obligations apply from that moment on. You need to make sure you have a license plate and that your vehicle is insured. You can buy a license plate from a license plate manufacturer recognized by the RDW.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a license plate required on a moped?

A license plate is mandatory for all mopeds riding on public roads, regardless of type (moped or moped). Only on private property is a license plate not mandatory. Since 2005, a license plate requirement has been in place in the Netherlands for all mopeds, and without a valid license plate you are therefore not allowed on the road.

Can you drive on private property without a license plate?

Yes, on private property you may ride a moped without a license plate, as long as you do not leave the property and it is not a public road. However, keep in mind that some land may be considered public even if it is privately owned, for example, if it is open to everyone.

What should you do if your moped's license plate has been stolen?

If your license plate is stolen, you should report it to the police and the RDW as soon as possible. You can then request a replacement license plate from an authorized license plate manufacturer. In the meantime, you are not allowed to drive without a license plate, not even with a proof of registration. If you do, you risk a hefty fine.
