Yellow license plate moped
Everyone is familiar with the yellow license plate for cars. But did you know that a moped can have two types of license plates? Namely yellow or blue. The color of the license plate indicates what type of scooter it is and what rules apply to the vehicle. We explain how fast you can drive with a yellow license plate and what the difference is from a blue license plate.
Calculate your premiumHow fast can you drive with a yellow license plate?
A moped with a yellow license plate allows you to ride 45 kilometers per hour. A yellow license plate usually has a black border and black letters. When riding a moped with a yellow license plate, you must always wear a helmet. In addition, with a yellow license plate you usually ride in built-up areas on the carriageway between cars instead of on the bicycle path.
Difference between blue and yellow license plate scooter
A scooter can have a yellow or a blue license plate. The main difference between the two is the speed limit and the place on the road. However, both require you to have at least an AM license and you must always wear a helmet. In addition, in the Netherlands you are required to take out at least moped insurance with third-party coverage for your scooter, regardless of the color of the license plate.
Yellow license plate
A scooter with a yellow license plate is also called a moped scooter. Mopeds with a yellow license plate are allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour. At a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour, a scooter is equivalent to a moped or scooter. Mopeds must usually ride on the roadway between cars unless otherwise specified.
Blue license plate
A scooter with a blue license plate is also called a moped. A moped scooter allows you to ride a maximum of 25 kilometers per hour. Until January 1, 2023, there was no helmet requirement for moped scooters. Nowadays, you must always wear a helmet on a scooter. Mustache scooters may use the bike path. If there is no bike path, they may also ride on the roadway, but even then a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour applies. In some cities, such as Amsterdam for example, mopeds are required to ride on the carriageway instead of the bike path.
Yellow license plate application
To apply for a yellow license plate for your moped (or moped being converted to a moped), you must undergo an inspection at the RDW RDW. This inspection checks whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads. The technical condition of the moped is also checked.
First, make an inspection appointment. Then you can apply for a one-day registration plate. With a one-day license plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
Within 5 working days after the inspection you will receive the registration card by mail. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. Once the license plate is in your name, you must fulfill the obligations of a licensee. You must take out moped insurance and make sure your moped has a yellow license plate. You must buy this license plate yourself from a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW. Be careful: prices may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, as they are allowed to set the price themselves.
