When moped inspection?

There are a number of situations in which you should have your moped inspected:

• If your moped does not yet have a Dutch license plate
• If you import a moped from abroad
• If you had a collision with damage
• If you adjust the speed of a moped to that of a moped
• If the police find when checking on the road that your moped has technical defects

In the latter case, the RDW can register a "prohibition from driving on public roads" in the license plate register. They also do this if the moped deviates from the data on the registration certificate. Only once you have had the moped inspected will the ban be lifted and you may ride on public roads again.

Moped inspection at RDW testing station

You can have your moped inspected at an RDW inspection station. A moped inspection is a technical inspection to determine whether a moped meets the legal requirements for admission on the road. This includes the construction speed, lighting, brakes, frame and engine numbers and noise level.

During the inspection, the inspector checks whether the vehicle is in good technical condition and meets the rules for driving on public roads. These are requirements in areas such as road safety and environmental aspects. In this way, the RDW ensures that all motor vehicles on the road meet the safety requirements.

Making an appointment

To do this, you must make an online inspection appointment. Is it a damage inspection? Then you can drive your moped from your home to the inspection station on public roads on the day of the inspection appointment. If you are having your moped inspected because it does not yet have a license plate, you can apply for a day licence plate. This allows you to ride your moped to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.

For a moped inspection you need a valid ID, the original proof of purchase or import document (in case of import), and any old registration papers. For a re-inspection after rejection, you must also bring the inspection report from the previous inspection.

The RDW charges the following fees for items related to the inspection. Not all fees apply to your vehicle.

• Vehicle identification (3500 kg or lighter): €56.50
• Assessment approval (5-9 aspects): €68.00
• Total RDW inspection (identification + assessment): €124.50
• Vehicle re-registration (3501 kg or heavier): €170.00
• Identity search in case of illegible/untraceable VIN: €55.00
• (Re)imprinting VIN: €55.00
• Damage inspection: €43.00
• Reissue/activation KB vehicle light: €64.00

Moped inspection requirements

Many moped owners wonder exactly what their vehicle will be inspected for. The RDW assesses the following points, among others:

• Construction speed: May be up to 45 km/h for a moped.
• Technical condition: Consider tires, brakes, lights and exhaust.
• Noise and emissions: Noise levels should not exceed legal limits.
• Chassis number (VIN): This must be legible and correct.
• Dimensions and seating: The moped must not have been modified in a way that affects safety.

By checking in advance that your moped meets these requirements, you can avoid surprises at the inspection station.

What if you disagree with a censure?

If you do not agree with the RDW inspector's opinion, you can file an objection. This must be done in writing within 6 weeks after the inspection. You must be able to substantiate why you think the inspection was unjustified. In some cases, a re-inspection by another inspector can be requested.

Getting moped inspected without papers: is it possible?

Sometimes you buy a used moped and the previous owner no longer has all the papers. The inspection will determine the year of construction or the date the moped was first put into service. If this is not possible on the basis of the moped, you must be able to prove the year of construction with additional documents. This could be, for example, a bill from the moped or a warranty certificate. In principle, you can also have your moped inspected without papers, as long as it meets all legal requirements. However, the inspection is faster with papers.

License plate application

If your moped is approved you will receive the registration card by mail within 5 working days. One business day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, you must fulfill all vehicle obligations, such as having a license plate and a WA moped insurance. If you do not have these things in order, you risk a fine. You can buy a license plate from a manufacturer recognized by the RDW and it costs about €30.
