Applying for new license plates

To apply, follow the steps below:

1. Choose from the overview A license plate manufacturer recognized by the RDW. You can recognize an approved license plate manufacturer by the RDW recognition shield and a sticker that reads "issue license plates.
2. Bring the following documents with you:
   - The original Vehicle Registration Certificate (Part IA) or the registration card. If you also lost the registration certificate, you must first apply for a new one
   - A valid proof of identity. A valid proof of identity is a Dutch passport, identity card or driver's license.
3. Pay the cost of the new license plate. The license plate manufacturer may set the price, so the price may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer
4. Then you will get the new license plates with a duplicate code. The duplicate code is a number on the license plate. This number indicates how many times license plates have been issued for the moped.

Do I have to file a police report if I lose my moped license plate?

If you suspect your license plate has been stolen, we always recommend reporting it to the police. You don't have to visit a police station to do this; you can report it online. Remember to keep a copy of the report.

Stolen license plates can be used for criminal activities, such as:

• Theft of fuel (driving away without paying),
• Driving without insurance or license,
• Committing traffic offenses such as speeding or running a red light.

If your license plate number then turns up on a fine or in an investigation, you may be unfairly perceived as the perpetrator. With a police report, you can prove that you are a victim.
