Everyone is familiar with the yellow license plate for cars. But did you know that a moped can have two types of license plates? Namely yellow or blue. The color of the license plate indicates what type of scooter it is and what rules apply to the vehicle. We explain how fast you can drive with a yellow license plate and what the difference is from a blue license plate.
Calculate your premiumHow fast are you allowed to drive with a yellow license plate?
On a moped with a yellow license plate, you are allowed to drive 45 kilometers per hour. A yellow license plate usually has a black border and black letters. If you drive on a moped with a yellow license plate, you must always wear a helmet. In addition, with a yellow license plate, you usually drive within built-up areas on the road between the cars instead of on the cycle path.
Difference between blue and yellow license plate scooter
A scooter can have a yellow or blue license plate. The biggest difference between the two is the maximum speed and the place on the road. However, for both you must have at least an AM driving license and that you must always wear a helmet. In addition, in the Netherlands you are obliged to take out at least a moped insurance with third-party coverage for your scooter, regardless of the color of the license plate.
Yellow license plate
A scooter with a yellow license plate is also called a moped. Mopeds with a yellow license plate may drive a maximum of 45 km per hour. At a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour, a scooter is equal to a moped or scooter. Mopeds must usually drive on the roadway between cars, unless otherwise indicated.
Blue license plate
A scooter with a blue license plate is also called a moped. With a moped, you are allowed to drive a maximum of 25 kilometers per hour. Until January 1, 2023, there was no helmet requirement for mopeds. Nowadays, you must always wear a helmet on a scooter. Mopeds are allowed to use the cycle path. If there is no cycle path, they are also allowed to drive on the roadway, but even then a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour applies. In some cities, such as Amsterdam, mopeds are required to drive on the roadway instead of the cycle path.
Yellow license plate application
To apply for a yellow license plate for your moped (or moped that is converted to a moped), you must apply for an inspection at the RDW . During this inspection, it is checked whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads. The technical condition of the moped is also checked.
First make an inspection appointment . Then you can apply for a one-day license plate . With a one-day license plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
Within 5 working days after the inspection, you will receive the registration card by post. One working day later, you will receive a letter with the registration code. As soon as the registration is in your name, you must meet the obligations of a registration holder. You must take out moped insurance and ensure that your moped has a yellow registration plate. You must purchase this registration plate yourself from a registration plate manufacturer recognized by the RDW. Pay close attention: the prices can differ per manufacturer, because they are allowed to determine the price themselves.
