Is a souped-up moped insured?

To get straight to the point: no, a souped-up moped is not insured. A moped has a maximum speed of 45 kilometres per hour. If you are a bit handy, tuning up a moped is not too difficult, which is why it is done more and more often. However, many people do not realise that a tuned up moped is not insured on a moped insurance. This means that if you have damage or an accident, the insurer will not pay anything. In that case, you have to pay the costs yourself. In addition, there is a good chance that you will receive a fine from the Ministry of Justice.

Does the insurer not pay anything?

You are legally obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance for your moped. This insures you against damage you may cause to others. The insurer assumes the maximum speed that legally applies to the vehicle. For a moped that is 45 kilometres per hour. A souped-up moped can of course go faster than the maximum speed and therefore has a greater chance of causing damage.

Does the insurer also not pay out in the event of liability damage?

Do you cause damage to someone else with your souped-up moped? Then the insurer is legally obliged to compensate the damage to the victim. However, the insurer will then recover these costs from you. In the end, you will have to pay for the damage yourself. A moped insurance does not cover you if it turns out that the moped has been tuned up.

What can I do if the insurer does not pay?

If the damage is limited to cosmetic damage, the costs are manageable. But in some cases an accident with the moped leads to personal injury. In that case, the costs are often much higher. Personal injury, for example from a collision with a pedestrian, can run into hundreds of thousands of euros. Then the fact that the moped insurer does not pay out is a bigger problem. It can even happen that the victim can never work again and has to adapt his or her house to a disability. If the insurer does not pay out, you will have to bear these costs yourself.

It is better not to take any unnecessary risks and therefore not to tune your moped. The risks are much bigger than you think in advance, no fast moped can compete with that. An accident is in a small corner. A wrong steering movement or a wrongly taken turn can already make you pay for a damage claim for life.
