Why suspend a moped?

If you won’t be using your moped for a while, it may be worth suspending its registration. This will help you save on costs. There are several reasons to temporarily suspend a moped’s registration. Perhaps you’re a fair-weather rider and prefer not to use your moped in the fall and winter. Or perhaps you’re going abroad for a while, which means you won’t be able to use it. Or maybe you’re currently physically unable to ride it, but would like to do so in the future. Whatever your reason, if you don’t plan to use your moped for a while, it makes sense to suspend its registration.

How do you suspend a moped?

There are several ways to suspend your moped’s registration. The easiest and fastest way is to do it online. You can also choose to arrange the suspension in person. You can do this at a vehicle registration office, an RDW inspection station, or an RDW service counter.

Suspend a moped online

You can suspend a moped online 24 hours a day. By logging in with your DigiD, you can easily enter the correct information. To suspend a moped online, follow these steps:

1. Go to“Request or Extend a Suspension.” Then log in with your DigiD. You will then be directed to the RDW service
2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend
3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2, or 3 years)
4. Pay the suspension fee via iDeal
5. You will then receive an email confirming your request
6. Your license plate will be suspended as soon as you receive a second email from the RDW. This email will also include the end date of your suspension. This email serves as proof of your suspension, so it is important that you keep it in a safe place.

Suspending a moped through the service counter

You can also suspend your moped's registration at a service counter. To suspend your moped's registration at a service counter, follow these steps:

1. Go to a vehicle registration office, RDW inspection station, or RDW service counter
2. Bring the certificate of registration and the transfer certificate OR the license plate card and the registration code. Don't forget to bring a valid form of identification.
3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2, or 3 years)
4. Pay the suspension fees
5. The employee will then provide you with a suspension report that also includes the end date of the suspension. This serves as your proof of suspension, so it is important that you keep it in a safe place.

When should you suspend a moped?

You can suspend your moped registration as soon as you no longer wish to use it. You cannot request a suspension for a future date. As soon as you request the suspension, the suspension period begins immediately. Not sure how long you want to suspend your moped? You can choose a suspension period of 1, 2, or 3 years. If you end the suspension early, you will not receive a refund.

What does it take to suspend a moped?

If you are deactivating your moped at the counter, you must bring the following documents:

• The Certificate of Registration
• The Transfer Receipt
• A valid identification document

Instead of the certificate of registration and the transfer certificate, you can also bring the registration card and the registration code. If you de-register the moped online, you can log in with your DigiD and select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to de-register.

Have someone else handle the suspension

If you are unable to apply for the suspension yourself, someone else can do it for you. If you have a digital vehicle registration card, that person can handle this for you online. The person arranging the suspension for you must be at least 16 years old (the minimum age for suspending another person’s vehicle is 18). If you have a paper vehicle registration certificate, you can only handle this at a service counter. If you have someone else arrange the suspension for you, they can follow these steps:

1. The person handling the suspension for you should go to “Request or Extend a Suspension” andthen log in with their own DigiD.
2. Next, he or she is directed to the RDW service. When asked, “Is this your own vehicle?” that person must answer “No.”
3. To suspend the moped's registration, he or she will need your registration card number and the registration code.
4. He or she decides whether the vehicle should be suspended for 1, 2, or 3 years.
5. Next, he or she must pay the fees via iDeal.
6. The RDW will then send a confirmation of the application to the email address provided.
7. The license plate will be suspended as soon as you receive a second email from the RDW.

Risks of Riding a Suspended Moped

If your moped has been suspended, you are no longer allowed to ride or park it on public roads. If you do take your moped out on the road anyway, you risk a hefty fine from the RDW.

Extend Suspension

Once the suspension period has ended, you can either end the suspension or extend it. You can extend your suspension starting up to 6 weeks before the suspension’s end date. In that case, the expiration date will remain the same as the end date of the original suspension. If you extend the suspension earlier than 6 weeks before it expires, you will not retain the original expiration date. The date on which you extend the suspension will then become the new expiration date, which will be 1, 2, or 3 years from that date. One month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW.

The moped's registration certificate remains valid. If you lift the suspension, you will not receive a new registration certificate.
