Moped suspension

Will you not be using your moped for a while, for example because it is getting too cold or because you cannot ride it for a while? Then you can suspend the moped. During the suspension, you do not have to comply with the WA insurance obligation. In that case, you can also (temporarily) stop your moped insurance.

What does it mean to suspend a moped?

Suspending a moped means that you suspend the vehicle's registration number. If the moped is suspended, you do not have to pay road tax and you do not have to undergo the MOT. You also do not have to comply with the WA insurance obligation. You can suspend your moped for 1, 2 or 3 years. The suspension will take effect as soon as you request it. You cannot suspend your moped for a date in the future. When the suspension period expires, you must immediately fulfil the vehicle obligations again. You can also choose to extend the suspension.

Why suspend a moped?

If you don't use your moped for a while, it can be worthwhile to suspend the licence plate. That way, you save on costs. There are several reasons for temporarily suspending a moped. Perhaps you are a real fair-weather driver and prefer not to use your moped in the autumn and winter. Or you are going abroad for a while, so you can't use the moped. Or maybe you are not physically able to use the moped at the moment, but would like to do so in the future. Whatever your reason, if you are planning not to use the moped for a while, it makes sense to suspend the moped.

How to suspend a moped?

You can suspend your moped in different ways. The easiest and fastest way is to do it online. You can also choose to arrange the suspension via the office. You can do this at a vehicle registration office, RDW testing station or RDW desk.

Suspend moped online

Suspending a moped online is possible 24 hours a day. By logging in with your DigiD, you can easily fill in the correct details. To suspend a moped online, you can follow the next steps:

  1. Go to 'Requesting or extending a suspension'. Then log in with your DigiD. You will then enter the RDW service
  2. Select the registration number of the vehicle you want to suspend
  3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the suspension costs via iDeal
  5. You will then receive confirmation of the application by e-mail.
  6. The licence plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second e-mail from RDW. This e-mail also contains the end date of your suspension. This e-mail is proof of your suspension, which is why it is important that you keep it.

Moped suspension through the counter

You can also arrange the suspension via an office. To suspend your moped via a counter, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to a vehicle registration office, RDW testing station or RDW desk
  2. Bring the registration certificate and the transfer certificate OR the registration card and the registration code. Don't forget a valid ID as well.
  3. Choose how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1, 2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the costs of the suspension
  5. You will then receive a suspension report from the employee, which will also contain the end date of the suspension. This is your proof of suspension, therefore it is important that you keep it.

When to suspend a moped?

You can suspend the moped at the moment you no longer want to use it. You cannot request a suspension for a date in the future. As soon as you request the suspension, the period of suspension will start immediately. Not sure how long you want to suspend your moped? You can let the suspension run for 1, 2 or 3 years. If you end the suspension sooner, you will not get your money back.

What does it cost to suspend a moped?

The cost of suspending a moped depends on the length of the suspension. You can suspend the moped for 1 year, 2 years or 3 years.

Duration of suspension Costs
Suspension for 1 year €11,10
Suspension for 2 years €22,20
Suspension for 3 years €33,30

What is required to suspend a moped?

If you suspend the moped at the ticket office, you have to take some documents with you:

  • The registration certificate
  • The certificate of registration
  • A valid identification document

Instead of the registration certificate and the transfer certificate, you can also take the registration card and the registration code with you. If you suspend the moped online, you can log in with your DigiD and select the licence plate of the vehicle you want to suspend.

Getting someone else to arrange the suspension

If you cannot request the suspension yourself, someone else can do it for you. If you have a vehicle registration card, the other person can arrange this for you online. The person who arranges the suspension for you must be at least 16 years old (for the suspension of another vehicle, the minimum age is 18). With a paper certificate of registration you can only arrange this at a counter. If you let someone else arrange the suspension, he or she can follow the following steps:

  1. The person who arranges the suspension for you goes to 'Request suspension or renewal' and then logs in with his/her own DigiD.
  2. He or she then enters the RDW service. To the question 'Does it concern your own vehicle', that person must answer 'No'.
  3. To suspend the moped, he or she needs your licence plate number and registration code
  4. He or she selects whether the vehicle should be suspended for 1,2 or 3 years.
  5. He or she must then pay the costs via iDeal.
  6. RDW then sends a confirmation of the application to the e-mail address given.
  7. The licence plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second e-mail from RDW.

Risks of driving with a suspended moped

With a suspended moped you are not allowed to drive or stand on public roads. If you still take your moped on the road, you risk a hefty fine from the RDW.

Extending suspension

When the suspension period is over, you can either end the suspension or extend it. You can extend your suspension from up to 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiry date will then remain the same as the end date of the old suspension. If you extend the suspension before the 6 weeks, you will not keep the old expiry date. The date you extend the suspension will then be the new expiry date after 1, 2 or 3 years. You will receive a reminder from RDW 1 month before the suspension expires.

The moped's registration certificate remains valid. If you end the suspension, you will not receive a new registration certificate.
