How can I apply for a license plate for a moped?
All mopeds nowadays have a licence plate. Without a licence plate, you are not allowed to drive your moped on public roads. Do you have an older moped, from before 2007? Then there is a good chance that it does not have a licence plate yet and you will have to apply for one. Fortunately, this is very easy. Applying for a licence plate via RDW
You can apply for a moped registration through the RDW. Your moped must first be inspected by the RDW. During the inspection they check whether the moped meets the rules for driving on public roads. They also check the technical condition. Without an inspection, you cannot get a new registration plate.
Steps for applying for a licence plate
Applying for a moped license plate is as follows:
- Make an appointment for the inspection. You can do this at 'Make an appointment for an examination'.
- To take your moped to the inspection, you can apply for a one-day registration plate. This can also be done via RDW by clicking on 'Apply for a one-day registration'. With a one-day registration plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
- After the inspection, you will receive the licence plate by post within 5 working days. One working day later, you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, you must meet all of the vehicle requirements, such as having a licence plate and third-party moped insurance.
- Finally, you buy a licence plate for your moped. Make sure that you do this from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW.
Conditions for applying for a licence plate
If you apply for a licence plate, you must meet a number of conditions. You have to be at least 16 years old and registered in the Basic Registration of Persons. If you want to register the moped in the name of a company, the company has to be established in the Netherlands. In addition, it may not be a one-man business. You have to appear in person at the inspection of your moped and you have to carry a valid identity document.
If your moped was put into service in 2006 or later, it must have been built following a type approval. If this is the case, the moped has a European Type Approval. You can then ask the moped's manufacturer or importer for a Certificate of Origin. If the moped does not yet have a European Type Approval, you must apply for an individual approval for the moped.
Documents you need to apply for a licence plate
During the inspection, the year of construction or the date when the moped was first put into use is determined. Sometimes it is not possible to do this on the basis of the moped. In that case, you must be able to prove it with additional documents. This can be done with an invoice or guarantee certificate, for example.
